The Beauty of Planning Ahead

In today’s busy world, time management skills for students are increasingly important. While we may wish things could slow down a bit, what is asked of young people now is increasingly demanding - both in and outside of school.

While each student has their own set of extracurricular activities, homework load and family obligations (and each may vary vastly), it is important for students to learn how to set goals and learn to manage their time effectively.

What is Time Management?

Like the energy our bodies have, time is a finite resource - there is only so much! This is why time needs to be effectively managed. Time management is about planning and controlling the amount of time you spend on specific tasks.

Students need to incorporate several executive function skills to to plan ahead and manage their time. These skills include (but are not limited to) goal setting, prioritizing, organization and managing stress.

  • Goal Setting: It’s almost impossible to use time well if you don’t know what to do with it. Students can benefit from setting short and long term goals.

  • Prioritizing: By thinking about what needs to be achieved within a given timeframe, tasks can be ranked according to their importance. Setting priorities for each day, week, month and year can help students accomplish their goals.

  • Organization: Once priorities are in place, it’s important to make a plan to get them done. Some people are well organized, and others need a little help. Strategies like using maintaining and up-to-date calendar and having an organized and clutter-free study environment help.

  • Managing Stress: No one can think straight when they are extremely stressed out. Learning and then incorporating stress-reduction techniques like deep breathing, yoga, and positive self talk can effectively reduce stress and increase focus.

Why are Time Management Skills Important?

Effective time management allows students to complete more in less time, because they are focused on the immediate task at hand and are not wasting time on distractions (think social media, video games, etc.). Efficient use of time also reduces stress, as students tick off items on their “to-do” list. It can also provide a sense of achievement from fulfilling goals. Being able to plan ahead and manage your time is not only vital for academic success, it is such an important life skill to have for the working world and beyond.
